Farm Information

Our farm headquarters is located three miles south of the Kansas/Nebraska state line and 50 miles east of the Kansas/Colorado state line and we farm dryland crops in Rawlins and Cheyenne Counties, Kansas, and Hitchcock County, Nebraska. At around 3000' elevation, we have a semi-arid climate typcial of the High Plains ecoregion. Average annual rainfall is 21 inches, most of which is received during the summer months. We have low humidity all year long and consequently experience large diurnal temperature changes throughout the year.

We farm Keith and Kuma silt loams on the flats, Ulysses and Colby silt loams on the side hills, and Bridgeport silt loams on the bottom ground. These are well-drained, deep soils, most of which are capable of storing up to 10 inches of plant-available water. In the top 8 inches, average soil pH is 6.9 and average organic matter is 1.8 percent. Our primary crops are winter wheat, corn, and grain sorghum, along with some alfalfa on our bottom ground. Water retention terraces cover the majority of our ground and they comprise almost 20% of all tillable acres.

State of Kansas is shown with main Highways and reference cities. Rawlins County is shown in the upper left-hand corner with green cross-hatches.

Detailed look at Rawlins County Kansas. All black-top roads are shown in black along with main towns. County (gravel and dirt) roads are shown in tan while creeks and drainage channels are shown in light blue. Kastens Inc. Farms is located in the northeast part of the county.
